The Hunters in the Snow is one of five surviving paintings representing the months of the year. It is typical of his peasant scenes, showing people engaged in every day tasks. Here, a group of hunters and their dogs approach a hill which leads down to a frozen lake in a town. As in many of his winter scenes, the ice is filled with skaters and other people busily enjoying winter. Bruegel (1525-1569) was a Dutch Renaissance painter whose works include Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (circa 1558), The Tower of Babel (1563), as well as his famous peasant scenes. Also known as "Peasant Bruegel," he was father to Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder, and uncle to Jan Brueghel the Younger.
