Place de la Bourse France Postcard

Place de la Bourse is the emblematic heart of Bordeaux, an architectural masterpiece of 18th-century French classicism. Commissioned by the Intendant Claude Boucher to create a grand opening from the medieval city to the Garonne River, it was designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the King's architect who also designed Place de la Concorde in Paris. The majestic horseshoe arrangement of buildings, including the Hôtel des Fermes (now a custom's museum) and the Palais de la Bourse, wraps around the square, culminating in the central Fountain of the Three Graces. Adding a surreal, contemporary dimension to this historic square is the Miroir d'eau (Water Mirror). Built in 2006, it is the world's largest reflecting pool, alternating between a shallow pool and a magical mist. This installation dramatically reflects the intricate stone facades, creating shifting illusions of light and symmetry. The Place de la Bourse is not only a symbol of Bordeaux's golden age but also a modern gathering place where past and present converge in spectacular fashion.
