The earliest recorded evidence of surfing in Pohnpei dates back to the 1960s, when American surfers began visiting the island. However, it was not until the 1990s that surfing really began to take off in Pohnpei. This was due in part to the opening of the Pohnpei Surf Club, which provided surfers with a place to stay and learn about the island's waves. Today, there are a number of surf spots in Pohnpei that are known for their world-class waves. These include P-Pass, Main Pass, and Lighthouse. P-Pass is considered to be one of the best lefthand reef breaks in the world, and it is a popular destination for experienced surfers. Main Pass is a more forgiving wave that is suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. Lighthouse is a smaller wave that is located near the island's capital, Palikir. The surfing season in Pohnpei runs from September to May. The best time to surf is during the winter months, when the waves are larger and more consistent. However, the island can be surfed year-round.
