Replica Vintage postcard c. 1910 of Pompeii, Buried in the ash from an eruption of Vesuvius in 70CE, the town was not rediscovered until 1748, though known about since the 16th century. Serious excavation was carried out in the 19th century. Subsequent damage to the site has enforced closing part of it, so less is available to tourists than could be seen there in the 1960s. A huge facelift is now planned for the site.
