The first roosters were whistles or toothpick holders. Today we find decorative roosters in ceramics, some are even pieces of modern art or monuments. There is no tourist who visits Portugal who does not take home a rooster in their suitcase! Roosters are present in all kinds of souvenirs, keyrings, magnets, bags, towels, and t-shirts. The miracle of saving a falsely accused pilgrim is attributed to Saint James ( São Tiago, in Portuguese) and is territorially linked to the road to Santiago of Compostela. In the Archaeological Museum of Barcelos there is a 14th-century granite cross alluding to this legend, representing the aforementioned “miracle”.
