Frits Zernike's discovery of the phase contrast method allowed living tissue to be examined under the microscope for the first time. This breakthrough garnered him the Rumford Medal in 1952 and the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1953. Today he is probably best known for the polynomials he posited in 1934 to describe optical aberrations in a circular mirror. The disc polynomials of Zernike are used to encode optical aberrations for systems such as telescopes and the human eye.
