Hellebore species bloom either in late Winter or early Spring, hence their common names of Christmas Rose or Lenten Rose. The Victorians saw them as a sign of hope, as they are a welcome sight in the front of the garden when it seems like nature is still deeply asleep and warmer weather will never return. Helleborus roots contain compounds similar to Digitalis (Foxglove), which is used for heart medications, and so are poisonous to people and other animals - a good deer deterrent! But the blooms bear rich nectar and lots of pollen, making them an instant hit for hungry early bumblebees.
