Río Celeste, Tenorio Volcano National Park Postcard

Río Celeste is one of Costa Rica’s most striking natural sights, known for its vivid turquoise color that looks almost unreal against the deep green rainforest. It flows through Tenorio Volcano National Park, a protected area in the northern part of the country, where volcanic activity shapes both the landscape and the river itself. The color comes from a natural chemical reaction between minerals in two clear streams that merge at a point called “Los Teñideros.” Instead of mixing into a darker shade, the minerals scatter light in a way that produces the river’s bright, opaque blue appearance. The highlight of the park is the Río Celeste waterfall, which plunges dramatically into a round, blue pool enclosed by steep jungle-covered walls. Reaching it requires a hike along a forest trail that passes over roots, small bridges, and thick vegetation, building anticipation before the falls suddenly come into view from an elevated lookout. The surrounding rainforest is dense and humid, filled with the sounds of insects and birds, and the sense of isolation makes the waterfall feel hidden and pristine. Even beyond the falls, the river continues through the forest, its unusual color creating a continuous visual contrast with the natural earth tones around it.
