Roses and Pinks by Elgood, Vintage English Garden
Roses and Pinks at Levens Hall, Kendal, Cumbria (1892) by George Samuel Elgood is a vintage Victorian Era fine art landscape painting. The world famous topiary gardens of Levens, in Northern England, which were begun in 1694 and designed by Guillaume Beaumont who had trained under André le Nôtre at Versailles. This view shows flower beds of roses, white-flowering dianthus and delphiniums set in the relief of the massive topiary. The wall in the background separates the garden from the park beyond. The gardens have remained essentially unchanged for over 300 years.
About the artist:
George Samuel Elgood (1851-1943) was an English artist and illustrator who became well-known for his paintings of classical formal gardens.
