Samaria Gorge, located in Crete, Greece, is one of Europe’s most spectacular natural wonders. Stretching 16 kilometers (10 miles) through the rugged White Mountains, it is one of the longest gorges in Europe and a popular hiking destination. The trail begins at Xyloskalo, at an elevation of 1,250 meters, and descends through a dramatic landscape of towering cliffs, pine forests, and ancient rock formations. The gorge narrows at the famous "Iron Gates" (Sideroportes), where the walls come as close as 3 meters (10 feet) apart while soaring up to 300 meters (984 feet) high.
