Sea Organ Croatia Postcard

The Sea Organ, or Morske orgulje, is an architectural sound art object located on the western quay of the Zadar peninsula. Designed by architect Nikola Bašić, this ingenious installation consists of a series of polyethylene pipes and a resonating cavity that transforms the energy of the Adriatic waves into haunting, melodic whistles. The visible portion of the organ features large marble steps that descend into the sea, inviting visitors to sit and listen to the 'music' of the tides. Since its completion in 2005, the Sea Organ has become a symbol of Zadar's post-war reconstruction and creative spirit. It harmonizes the natural environment with modern urban design, creating a space where the rhythm of nature dictates the soundtrack. As the sun sets—a spectacle once described by Alfred Hitchcock as the most beautiful in the world—the organ provides a meditative backdrop for locals and travelers alike, blending the salt air with an eternal, underwater symphony.
