Sergeant Stubby T-Shirt

Stubby was a stray mixed breed (presumably a pit/Boston terrier mix) who began hanging around the 102nd infantry training grounds in New Haven. He eventually became the mascot, though it was James Robert Conroy who became his primary companion. When it was time to go to war Conroy smuggled him aboard the boat. Once on base the commanding officer got word of the dog's presence and went to the tent with the intention of punishing the smuggler and getting rid of the dog. As he walked in the men, acknowledging the officer, stood and saluted. Having spent many months in boot camp prior to his deployment, Stubby had long since learned this maneuver. The commanding officer saw the dog standing in formation looking him in the eye while holding his right paw to his temple. No sooner than he had walked into the tent did he walk out with a change of heart. Stubby was literally in the trenches with the troops on several occasions, serving such purposes as running out under gunfire to look for wounded, alerting the men to impending attacks, and even spotting and catching a German spy sneaking around the camp. His and Conroy's is a really wonderful story. I highly recommend looking it up as there is far more to the story than can fit here.
