Seurat Postcard
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, 1884 - 1886, Art Institute of Chicago
One of the definitive icons of Post-Impressionism, it is a monumental work that revolutionized how artists used color and optical science
Instead of blending paints on a palette, Seurat applied tiny, distinct dots of pure, unblended color directly onto the canvas. He relied on the human eye and mind to optically blend the colors from a distance, creating a luminous, vibrating intensity that flat mixtures could not achieve.
