General Sherman, commanding the army at Chattanooga marched out with a hundred thousand men on his march against Atlanta, defended by the Confederates under General Johnston. On 2 September, the city of Atlanta was evacuated. The Confederate army was in ruins. On 14 November of this year, General Sherman burned Atlanta and Sherman began his famous March to the Sea.
