How can a design be at once simple, but detailed... plain, but striking? It's impressive for a black and white piece to be as striking as this one is. Is it the deep, hollow eye sockets of the skull? I think that's what does it for me. Not overly complicated, but still laden with intricate, tiny details, this skull design is full of little surprises. From the fact that the shadow effect is achieved via tiny cross-hatch work, to the bit of glamour introduced by a floating diamond, to the perplexing nature of an impossible triangle, the surprises go on and on. Framed by a blank banner and leafy crest, set against a splashy, shadowy gradient background, this piece keeps the eye engaged and enthralled.
