Split Top Mountain on Unalaska Island Postcard

This view of Split Top Mountain was taken from the beach along the spit at the north end of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The spit was built to protect the main docking areas at the base of Ballyhoo Mountain from heavy seas. Split Top and Dutch Harbor are located on Unalaska Island. Unalaska Island is a part of the Aleutian chain of islands which extend westward from the Alaskan Penninsula. Unalaska Island has been the central hub for commercial fishing in the Bering Sea. Its mountainous terrain and sheltered bays, coupled with its location of being halfway between the main fishing grounds and mainland Alaska on the primary shipping lanes makes it ideal for this purpose.
