St. Matthias (1st century) was chosen by lot in the interim between the Ascension and Pentecost to replace Judas Iscariot as an Apostle. Traditions vary somewhat about his post-selection ministry but agree that he suffered martyrdom. Here, he shoulders an axe as its instrument; in other representations, he may carry a spear or halberd. I never thought about collecting Christmas Ornaments for each place my husband & I traveled until later on in our lives.
