Over the centuries, St. Michael the Archangel has most often been depicted in art wearing a helmet and armor and carrying a sword and shield. The shape of his shield has varied according to the time and the place where the artist lived. It’s been round, oval, rectangular, and most of the various armorial shapes familiar from heraldry. In recent times, however, because he is patron saint of police officers, religious medal makers have adopted law enforcement badge shapes to cast St. Michael medals. For this reason, we are calling the blue shield device on items in this product line “St. Michael’s Shield” to parallel the “St. Florian’s Cross” of firefighters. + Like our St. Florian's Cross products, St. Michael's Shield products come in four versions but in blue instead of red. The variants we offer are as follows: all blue with a center suitable for monogramming, blue with a blank center for a photo insert, blue with a white band across the middle ready to receive your text, and blue with a black band to be used for memorials. The versions are interchangeable. We have used a variety of fonts on our monogrammed products to illustrate design possibilities. We find that the fonts that work best for monograms are generally vertical, or nearly so, with thick downstrokes. Our choices for three initial fonts include: Pirata One, Hobo, Impress, as well as Claudia, Cookie, and Mightype Cursive which are somewhat more “feminine”.
