Starry Night Over the Rhone by Vincent van Gogh Metal Print

"Starry Night Over the Rhône" is one of Vincent van Gogh's iconic nighttime paintings of Arles. He painted it on the bank of the Rhône, just a minute or two's walk from the Yellow House on Place Lamartine, where he was living at the time. The night sky and the effects of light in the dark were themes van Gogh often explored, as seen in other famous works like "Café Terrace at Night," painted earlier that same month, and "The Starry Night," created in June 1889 in Saint-Rémy. A sketch of "Starry Night Over the Rhône" was included in a letter van Gogh sent to his friend Eugène Boch on October 2, 1888. The painting, now housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, was first exhibited in 1889 at the annual exhibition of the Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris. It was displayed alongside van Gogh's "Irises," which his brother Theo added, despite Vincent's preference for including a painting of Arles' public gardens.
