If you're thinking this doesn't look much like an aster . . . you're quite right! It's actually a double-blooming spider aster. Asters are the "birthday flower" for folks born in the month of September, probably because these flowers provide an abundance of large blooms in summer and early fall. It could also be based on the myth that the Greek Goddess Virgo who was saddened by the lack of stars in the sky and began to cry. Aster flowers began to grow on each spot where her tears landed.
