Unlike Scotland's typical fortifications, Stirling Castle is a feat of Renaissance architecture. Royal apartments, a Great Hall lined with stained glass windows and wall-walks with dreamy views over the city of Stirling and central Scotland. Emerging from a high, craggy peak, sheer cliff faces on three of its four sides, the Castle was once one of the most impenetrable strongholds in Britain - made most famous by warrior William Wallace who helped the Scots recapture it from the English during the historic Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. It was also the home of choice for royalty, including Mary Queen of Scots who grew up at Stirling Castle and was crowned Queen in its Chapel in 1534.
