"Fracking" is short for "hydraulic fracturing". This well-drilling process pumps water, sand and toxic chemicals a mile or so below ground to release natural gas trapped in rocks. If the process is successful, the deep rocks fracture, releasing gas, which is piped to the surface. If unsuccessful, some of the gas and toxic chemicals move through cracks and fissures below ground, where they sometimes mix with underground water supplies, perhaps even ruining a valuable aquifer.
