Svartifoss, the 'Black Falls,' is located in the Skaftafell Nature Reserve and is famous for its backdrop of dark, hanging basalt columns. These hexagonal pillars were formed by slow-cooling lava and have inspired the architecture of several Icelandic landmarks, including Hallgrímskirkja.
The waterfall itself is narrow and elegant, falling gracefully over the edge of the dark columns into a pool of tumbled rocks. The contrast between the white water and the obsidian-like stone pillars creates a sharp, geometric beauty that feels both ancient and modern.
