The Jungfrau Railway (JB) is an electric cogwheel railway in Switzerland. Since August 1912 it has been running from Kleinen Scheidegg through Eiger and Mönch to Jungfraujoch with the highest railway station in Europe (tunnel station, 3454 m) and crosses almost 1400 meters of altitude over a length of 9.34 kilometers. A little more than seven kilometers of the route lie in the tunnel. The railway is located in the Bernese Oberland of the Canton of Bern, the last meters from the Sphinx Observatory and the terminal is located in the Canton of Valais. For a long time the Jungfrau was considered the most famous mountain in Switzerland. Many poets, painters and scholars traveled to the Jungfrau region to admire, document and write poems about the glaciers, mountain lakes and waterfalls of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triad. A 1577/78 text on the 4158 m high Jungfrau Summit says: ‘The Virgin is a very high mountain, steaming of eternal snow and ice, therefore completely inaccessible’. This changed on August 3, 1811, when the brothers Johann Rudolf and Hieronymus Meyer were the first to reach the summit. Perhaps it was the fascination that led to the summit's success that triggered the desire to build a railway to the summit of the Virgin. At the end of the nineteenth century, this desire took on concrete forms. The "mountain railway fever" raged throughout Switzerland. As a result, a whole series of gears were built. The highlight of the construction fever was the Jungfrau Railways.
