The Te Araroa Trail, meaning “The Long Pathway” in Māori, is New Zealand’s premier long-distance hiking route, stretching roughly 3,000 kilometers (1,900 miles) from Cape Reinga at the northern tip of the North Island to Bluff at the southern end of the South Island. Officially opened in 2011, the trail weaves through a stunning variety of landscapes—golden beaches, dense native forests, rugged mountains, alpine passes, farmland, and urban centers.
