Team Messalina Roman Empress Button

Messalina (full name Valeria Messalina) was the wife of the Emperor Claudius and mother of his son Brittanicus. She was accused by various Roman writers of plotting against various members of her husband's family, as well as several senators whom she viewed as a threat. She was also accused of being repeatedly unfaithful to her husband. She was executed on Claudius' orders after she reportedly married another man. Accounts are confusing, but it may be that there was a plot to overthrow Claudius and Messalina acted to ensure she would survive a regime change. Claudius ordered her death, and when she was unable to take her own life one of those sent to oversee her death killed her himself.
