The Blue Dancers, Degas Art Postcard

Around 1880 Degas's grays gave way to brilliant colors, ranging from red to russet, and muted tones were replaced by warm ones. This came with a change in style and technique, in which pastels became his dominant medium. Degas produced a series of colored pastel drawings of dancers including “The Blue Dancers” which depicts four ballerinas in lavender-blue costumes dancing in a recital, a performance of music by a small group. The use of blue paste and flowing composition creates harmony amongst the dancers. Degas's later paintings of dancers remove the figures completely from the realist atmosphere of the stage. The luminous tracery of colors now reigns supreme. The dancers become the essence of rhythmic movement, pure emanations of colors.
