The John Paul Jones House Portsmouth New Hampshire Postcard

The John Paul Jones House Portsmouth New Hampshire Postcard

This postcard features The John Paul Jones House which is an historic house museum and a National Landmark in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA. It is most significant as it is the only known surviving structure in the United States associated with American Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones, who was resident here in 1781-82 when it was operated as a boarding house. This wood frame house was built in 1758 by the master house wright , Hopestill Cheswell, a successful African-American builder in the city. The house was built for Captain Gregory Purcell, who owned it with his wife Sarah until his death in 1776. John Paul Jones, colonial America’s first sea warrior, was a tenant of the Widow Purcell in this house in 1781. He lived here while he supervised the building of the Navy’s ship America nearby. Though he loved Portsmouth, he left New Hampshire in 1782 never to return. His house is now the museum of Portsmouth men, women and children, where their stories live. I joined Postcrossing a few months ago and wanted postcards to represent my state well. I found them on Zazzle. I purchased numerous cards and was impressed with all of them. Excellent! The colors are beautiful. The cards have the exact look I wanted. I couldn't be happier.
