The Lord of Burleigh and his Lady Tissue Paper

This design features a painting by the English artist Edmund Blair Leighton (1852–1922). It depicts a scene from Tennyson’s 1835 poem, in which a rich Lord pretends to be poor in order to win a woman’s heart. However, in this image, the Lord of Burleigh is dressed elegantly and he is holding the hand of his lover as she stands beside him; they have now accepted each other in love. The Lord is seated with an easel on his lap as he paints a landscape. His true love is is wearing a long dress and holding a wooden basket: perhaps she is foraging food from the countryside or perhaps she has been shopping. The two lovers are together in a rural field with a large tree surrounded by plants and flowers in the background.
