The Shangani Patrol Postcard

The Shangani Patrol Postcard

The Last Stand of the Shangani Patrol, also known as the Shangani Patrol Massacre, occurred during the First Matabele War in 1893 in what is now modern-day Zimbabwe. Major Allan Wilson, a British officer, led a small group of 34 men, primarily troopers from the British South Africa Company's Police Force, deep into the territory of the Ndebele people to confront the Ndebele King Lobengula. The patrol's mission was to locate and capture Lobengula, who was believed to be leading the resistance against British colonial forces in the region. However, the patrol was ambushed by a significantly larger Ndebele force, estimated to be in the thousands, near the Shangani River. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Wilson and his men valiantly fought back, engaging in a fierce firefight. The battle raged for hours, but ultimately, the Shangani Patrol was overwhelmed by the Ndebele warriors. In the end, Major Allan Wilson and all of his men were killed, either during the battle or after being captured by the Ndebele. Their bravery and determination in the face of insurmountable odds became legendary, symbolizing the courage of the British colonial forces during their expansion into Southern Africa. The Last Stand of the Shangani Patrol remains a poignant episode in colonial history, commemorating the sacrifices made during the scramble for Africa in the late 19th century.

I joined Postcrossing a few months ago and wanted postcards to represent my state well. I found them on Zazzle. I purchased numerous cards and was impressed with all of them. Excellent! The colors are beautiful. The cards have the exact look I wanted. I couldn't be happier.
