This painting depicts the Virgin Mary, her mother, St. Anne, and the infant Jesus. Christ is playing with the lamb, which symbolizes passion and Mary is restraining him. This painting was in the later years of his life, and is left unfinished.
The symbolism involved indicates that although Mary is anxious in taking care of the Christ child, her mother's Serene expression indicates that the church does not want to have the Passion of the Christ prevented. It appears that Leonardo borrowed Raphael's triangle in achieving this composition.
