The depiction is one of a black-faced man racing as though driven by an unseen power forcefully sweeping him along at an unnatural speed. He seems consumed with time as he presses an obscure beast to meet the rapidity to which his task demands. It is a whirlwind of motion. The indefinable animal, the speed, the anxiety of it all appears to suggest that the immediacy of the errand is not of natural origin. His hat might suggest the time of this occurrence to be that of early American history. What could be so urgent that mere beasts and even current modes of transportation would appear inadequate? Our subject does not seem to be driven by forces behind, but instead by the necessity of an event yet to occur. He is attempting to recover time by the sheer force of speed. The darkened black face of the man alerts observers to the singular event that must constrain him to move at inexpressible speeds and yet have his mission remain imperceptibly anonymous. His is an errand of historical significance, so he must absolutely recover time if slavery is to be reversed.
