Toccoa Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls to get to in Northern Georgia. It is such a peaceful place. Toccoa Falls is a natural waterfall located in Toccoa, Georgia, USA. The waterfall is situated on the campus of Toccoa Falls College, a private Christian liberal arts college. The history of Toccoa Falls dates back to the 1800s when the area was inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. In 1827, a missionary named Samuel A. Worcester arrived in the area and established a mission station. He named the waterfall "Toccoa Falls" after the nearby town of Toccoa. The mission station eventually became the Toccoa Falls College. On November 6, 1977, tragedy struck the Toccoa Falls community when a dam holding back a lake on the campus property burst. The resulting flood killed 39 people and destroyed much of the campus. The disaster is considered one of the deadliest dam failures in U.S. history. In the aftermath of the flood, the college was rebuilt and the area around Toccoa Falls was turned into a memorial park. Today, Toccoa Falls is a popular destination for visitors to the area who come to enjoy the natural beauty of the waterfall and the surrounding park.
