Tokugawa Aoi (13 petals) Edo Lapel Pin

In the Tokugawa family, the number of pistils on the crest was not standardized at first. According to "Gomon Hikae Sho," a document submitted to the shogunate by Goto Nuidono-suke, the tailor for the shogun's clothes, during the Bunsei era (1818-1830), the first three shoguns, Ieyasu, Hidetada, and Iemitsu, used 33 pistils; Ietsuna used 19 and 23; Tsunayoshi used 23 and 27; Ienobu used 31 and 35; (the original document is missing for Ietsugu); Yoshimune used 23; and Ieshige and Ieharu both used 13.
