Toshizo Hijikata T-Shirt

Toshizo HIJIKATA (May 31, 1835 - June 20, 1869) Born in Ishida village, Tama County, Tokyo (present Ishida, Hino City, Tokyo). He was a retainer of the Shogunate and the vice commander of the Shinsengumi during the end of the Edo period. His imina (personal name) was Yoshitoyo, his gago (pseudonym) was Toyotama, and his family crest was Hidari mitsudomoe. During the Shinsengumi era, he was called the Vice Commander of Oni and was feared by the members. In the Boshin War, he distinguished himself in military service as one of the commanders of the former Shogunate army, and in the so-called 'Ezo Republic,' he was appointed to the head of the military department and played an important role in the military. On May 11, 1869, he was killed in the Battle of Hakodate Goryokaku Defense. He died at the age of 35.
