Turkish Spices Postcard
The vast supply of spices available in Turkey originates in its' strategic placement on the Silk Road. In 130 BCE-1453 CE, people transported all kinds of goods, including rice, perfume, tea, paper, silk and spices from China, India and Persia. Istanbul is still known for having one of the largest and most famous spice bazaars (Mısır Çarşısı) which was the last stop on the Silk Road. Piles of colorful spices are beautifully arranged to draw your attention and signs for saffron, sumac, cinnamon, ginger line the corridor. Smaller spice bazaars can be found in every Turkish city and they are a regular part of the Turkish grocery shopping experience. In the image above, you can see piles of spices for sale, as well as a spice packet souvenir often sold at the markets.
