Taken from a World War I poster, the pair walk arm-in-arm to represent the U.S. - U.K. alliance in opposition to the Central Powers. The original poster invited New Yorkers to celebrate "Britain's Day," an acknowledgement by the people of the United States of "the nobility with which the Anglo-Saxon standard of fair play had been upheld for four years by the British Empire." At the time, Britain had been a combatant in World War I for four years, and the United States had only recently, in April 1917, given up its neutrality to enter the war against Germany.
