The modern America police state depends upon two crucial elements to keep the people it lords over pliant and servile. First, the people must always be afraid. Afraid of terrorism - even though they have a better chance of suffocating in their own bed statistically than being hurt by a terrorist. Fear of foreigners, fear of small foreign countries with weapons that American government sold them. Fear of sickness and pandemics, and unapproved of drugs, of food-borne illness, and saturated fats. Fear of not breaking the millions of "laws" and rule thrust on them as the list grows larger by the year. Fear of criminals, fear of environmental catastrophe, fear of not having a job, or money, or food on the table. Fear of not having proper "education" for children. Fear is the invisible chain that holds each man down so that he takes his lashes and is thankful for them. Each day brings a new crisis or policy war against a boogieman blown out of proportion so that the government can propagandize it's necessity to the people. The next is ignorance. as Thomas Pynchon said in Gravity’s Rainbow, “If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about the answers.” From the controlled media to the government schools, Americans can barely read - most graduates never again finish a book after graduation - think, write, or converse about topics like civilized, dignified individuals because the very tools to do so - such as reason and facts - have been schooled out of them.
