UNESCO WHS Serie - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Mauna Loa - The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park contains two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa 13'679 ft (4'169 m) high and Kīlauea 4'091 ft (1'250 m) high, both of which tower over the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic eruptions have created a constantly changing landscape, and the lava flows reveal surprising geological formations. Rare birds and endemic species can be found there, as well as forests of giant ferns. Mauna Loa is the world largest subaerial volcano in both mass and volume. It is an active shield volcano with relatively gentle slopes, with a volume estimated at 18'000 cubic miles (75'000 km3). Lava eruptions from Mauna Loa are silica-poor and very fluid, and they tend to be non-explosive. Mauna Loa has probably been erupting for at least 700'000 years, and may have emerged above sea level about 400'000 years ago.
