UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Historic Centre of Cordoba / Centro histórico de Córdoba Córdoba's period of greatest glory began in the 8th century after the Moorish conquest, when some 300 mosques and innumerable palaces and public buildings were built to rival the splendours of Constantinople, Damascus and Baghdad. In the 13th century, under Ferdinand III, Córdoba's Great Mosque was turned into a cathedral and new defensive structures, particularly the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and the Torre Fortaleza de la Calahorra, were erected. The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is a building of military character whose construction was ordered by the King Alfonso XI of Castile in the year 1328, on previous constructions the Islamic-era Umayyad Alcázar. The architectural ensemble has a sober character in its exterior and splendid in its interior, with the magnificent gardens and courtyards that maintain a Mudéjar inspiration.
