UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Old City of Salamanca / Ciudad vieja de Salamanca This ancient university town was first conquered by the Carthaginians in the 3rd century BC. It then became a Roman settlement before being ruled by the Moors until the 11th century. The university, one of the oldest in Europe, reached its high point during Salamanca's golden age. The city's historic centre has important Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The Convent of Santa Clara is a convent belonging to the Order of the Franciscans or Poor Clares and it was founded in 1238. It retains few Gothic remains as it was renovated in the 16th century. The church was originally covered with an attractive Mudejar coffered ceiling dating between the 14th and 15th centuries, but at the beginning of the 18th century it was covered with a new Baroque vault.
