It then became a Roman settlement before being ruled by the Moors until the 11th century. The university, one of the oldest in Europe, reached its high point during Salamanca's golden age. The city's historic centre has important Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The church of San Marcos in Salamanca is a Romanesque-style building located in the area of the old city wall at the Puerta de Zamora. It was built at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century and was intended to be a parish. It is unique due to its round plant and its small size (around 22 meters in diameter). The building was the headquarters of the Royal Clerecía de San Marcos.
