UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Romania Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania - Biserici fortificate din Transilvania - Village of Câlnic - These Transylvanian villages with their fortified churches provide a vivid picture of the cultural landscape of southern Transylvania. The 7 villages inscribed, founded by the Transylvanian Saxons, are characterized by a specific land-use system, settlement pattern and organization of the family farmstead. They are dominated by their fortified churches, built from the 13th to the 16th century. Câlnic Citadel, first mentioned in 1269, is very well preserved. Built as a noble's residence, it was bought in 1430 by local peasants and fortified. It consists of a large court surrounded by walls and some buildings adjacent to the walls. In the middle of the court there is a large donjon as well as a chapel.
