Vintage Ad - Frog Perfumes a Bouquet,

This is a vintage advertisement for E. W. Hoyt & Co. of Lowell, Massachusetts, the seller of Hoyt's German Perfume. The ad features a frog sitting on a toadstool amidst some cattails on the banks of a lake. He tips a bottle of Hoyt's German Perfume high in the air as he sprinkles the contents over a bouquet of flowers to enhance their scent. The cologne sold was not actually from Germany or made in Germany, but was given that name by E. W. Hoyt in 1870 just to provide a distinctive name for the product. Hoyt sold his products in his apothecary shop in Lowell, MA and also by way of traveling salesmen who traveled from store to store selling Hoyt's cologne. The first forms of advertising and allowing customers to sample the cologne was through giving away trade cards scented with the cologne and by selling vials of the cologne to induce patrons to ultimately purchase a full bottle.
