Vintage illustration marine life Leaping Smallmouth Bass on the Line by Richard La Barre Goodwin, 1900. A smallmouth bass fish is jumping out of the lake with a hook in his mouth. Smallmouth bass have slender but muscular bodies making them powerful swimmers. They range in color from golden-olive to dark brown which fades to a yellowish white with dark brown vertical bars or blotches along the body and dark brown horizontal bars on the head.
