About This Design

Vintage - Pat a Cake, Pat a Cake,

Vintage - Pat a Cake, Pat a Cake,

A vintage illustration by Clara M. Burd from the children's nursery rhyme, "Pat a Cake, Pat a Cake." It depicts the baker sitting on a low stool in the pantry and he plays Pat a Cake with an adorable baby girl sitting in a chair at his knees. "Pat a Cake, Pat a Cake, Baker's Man, Bake Me a Cake As Fast As You Can! Roll it, pat it, and mark it with a T, and put it in the oven for baby and me!" This is one of the oldest English nursery rhymes, first appearing as "Pat a Cake" but with slightly different words in a play in 1698. The next appearance of the rhyme was in "Mother Goose's Melody" in 1765 where the term "Pattycake" was used instead of "Pat a Cake." The American artist, Clara M. Burd (1873-1933) was born in New York, and studied art in New York City and later in Paris. She is best known for her illustrations for children’s books, but she also illustrated for magazine covers, designed stained glass and murals for churches, and painted children’s portraits and scenes from historical periods.
