His experimental use of color and style were distinct and unlike Impressionism – it would later inspire a group of artists. Gauguin’s work greatly inspired the French avant-garde and fauvism, an early 20th-century movement in painting that was started about 1905 by a group of French artists including Henri Matisse. This movement embodied the use of simple forms and bright colors. It was only after his death in 1903 that Gauguin’s work was treasured and he gained recognized for his exploratory use of color and style.
