Vintage Victorian Fox Paperweight
A frisky red fox (vulpes vulgaris) is featured in this beautiful antiquarian book design. The background is from an antique tree calf-leather pattern book binding from 1878 -- a technique developed in the 1770s that drips an acidic compound to create a natural looking tree bark/branch pattern. This design is sure to please those who love dogs, the wild ancestors of the domestic dogs, and vintage animal illustrations. Red fox chromolithograph color plate adapted from G.H. von Schubert's "Natural History of the Animal Kingdom," Germany, 1885 for the British book of the same title by William Forsell Kirby. Published by E. & J.B. Young and Co, Brighton, 1889.
