It is named after George Washington (1732–1799), the first US president. Washington is often referred to as Washington State to distinguish it from the nation's capital, Washington DC. The flag depicts the state seal, which contains an image of state namesake George Washington, on a field of dark green. It is the only US state flag with a field of green; it is also the only state flag that contains the image of an American president.
