Most states, red states anyway, have a fervent belief in the majesty of the US Constitution. For Utah, however, this belief is stepped up a bit. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, said that the Constitution was inspired by God and constructed by men who were called by God for that purpose. It is considered by Mormons to be divinely inspired, like biblical scripture. Joseph Smith also prophesied that there would come a time when the United States would cease to respect the Constitution, that it would "hand by a thread" and that Mormon men would step forward to save it. Hence, Mormons are VERY serious about the Constitution. Deseret is the original name given to the Intermountain West by the Mormon pioneers when they first arrived. Today that area comprises all or parts of the states of Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and Arizona. Also known as the Jello Belt!
